TN moves SC on allowing council polls
In a bid to get the elections to the revived Tamil Nadu Legislative Council held before the Assembly polls fixed for April 13 by the Election Commission, the DMK-led coalition in the state on Tuesday moved the Supreme Court seeking the recall of its February 21 order staying the LC polls till July.
In a hectic move, the petition of the state government was mentioned by its counsel before a bench of Justices J.M. Panchal and H.L. Gokhale for urgent hearing.
The petition filed by Tamil Nadu law secretary S. Dheenadhayalan, while seeking the lifting of the top court stay order, preferred to hold the elections to the LC in the first week of March.
The petition is likely to be taken up for hearing on Wednesday. It pointed out that the process of finalisation of the electoral rolls for the LC polls had been completed and the EC had notified it on January 1.
