TN tells CBI to vacate office
The Tamil Nadu government has asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to vacate the office of its multi disciplinary monitoring agency (MDMA) located off Greenways Road, citing lack of availability of bungalows for state ministers.
The MDMA had been set up to probe the possible international conspiracy behind former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination.
A government order issued in the second week of April notes that the public department had already allotted accommodation for 27 ministers and the process of providing accommodation to the remaining ministers and deputy Speaker was under consideration.
“Many ministers are staying in government guest houses and the government is taking steps to allot residential quarters to the ministers,” said a senior government official.
The government communication requests the CBI to keep all the MDMA records related to the investigation into the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case in some other building and vacate government bungalow NB-16, at PS Kumarasamy Raja Salai (Greenways Road) to one of the ministers.
The government had asked senior PWD officials to make necessary arrangements in the bungalow (to convert it into a residence for a minister) immediately after the CBI vacates the building.
State government officials said that they have so far not received any reply from the premier investigation agency. “The CBI Chennai office is saying that it had informed the headquarters in Delhi about the state government request,” a state official said.
With the first three accused in the Rajiv Gandhi case dead and many waiting to be hanged
based on CBI’s SIT findings, the MDMA office in Chennai is used as a file-keeping facility by the agency, the state official noted.
