From today, CWG lanes may lead to traffic chaos
The Delhi police will operationalise the dedicated Commonwealth Ga-mes lanes on selected roads from Thursday. Regular traffic will not be closed fully. Those violating the rules and deliberately straying into the lanes will be fined `2,000. Joint commissioner of police (traffic) Satyendra Garg said: “The exclusive lanes will come into effect from Thursday. It will be done on a need-based manner and there will be no 24-hour closedown.”
The police had decided to operationalise the Games lanes from Monday, but later postponed it as the first batch of athletes will arrive only on Thursday. People have been advised to avoid all roads with CWG lanes, and in particular Safdarjung Road, Kamal Ataturk Marg, Panchsheel Marg, Sardar Patel Marg, Siri Fort Road, Harsukh Marg, Purana Quila Road and Mother Teresa Crescent as these have only two lanes in one carriageway, and one of them is reserved for Games-related traffic.
