Top court for affidavit on UP encounter
Not satisfied with the oral statement of Uttar Pradesh government counsel on an alleged “fake encounter” of a Rajasthan youth in Mathura ten days ago, the Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the Mayawati government to file an affidavit on the issue.
A vacation bench of Justices G.S. Singhvi and C.K. Prasad directed Uttar Pradesh’s additional advocate general Shail Dwivedi to file the affidavit by May 31 giving complete details of the incident.
A petition was filed in the Supreme Court by Jhadmal, who alleged that his son Saleem was killed in a “fake encounter” on the intervening night of May 15/16 near Jundvai village in Mathura district.
The petitioner accused the SHOs of two police stations — Chhata and Farha — and some senior officers of the “stage managed” encounter after his son Saleem was “falsely” charged of robbing a “Bolero vehicle” from Jundvai panchayat president.
In fact, his son was “physically challenged” after he had met with an accident some months ago and was not even able to walk properly, Jhadmal in his petition stated.
“The petitioner has reasons to believe (about fake encounter) that in last two months, SHO police station Farah has allegedly killed 20 innocent persons in false encounter like his son,” Jhadmal claimed, adding that the SHO, known as “encounter specialist”, is believed to have strong political patronage as well as protection of the high ranking police officers.
The apex court had issued notice to the Uttar Pradesh government on May 25 on the petition.
