Top Kalmadi confidant arrested
Mumbai/New Delhi, Feb. 11: The CBI on Friday arrested the former Commonwealth Games Organising Committee chairman, Mr Suresh Kalmadi’s aide, Mr Shekhar Deorukhkar, in the multi-crore overlays scam.
Mr Deorukhkar is the fifth person to be arrested in the scam in which nearly `600 crore worth contracts relating to the Games’ overlays project are under the scanner of various agencies.
The arrest came after the CBI had registered a fresh case under various legal provisions in award of contracts for overlays at different venues for the Games at exorbitant rates, a CBI spokesperson said.
Mr Deorukhkar was picked up from his residence in Pune by a CBI team from Delhi and was booked under cheating and conspiracy charges of the IPC.
He has been Mr Kalmadi’s PA for over 15 years. He was later produced before district judge who granted CBI transit remand of the accused.
The agency is also expected to register three more FIRs related to sponsorship contracts to an Australian firm, purchase of surface tracks for different stadiums and alleged irregularities committed in awarding broadcast contract (worth `246 crore) for the Games to a UK-based company by the Prasar Bharti.
