Top Kolkata principal faces abetment to suicide charge
A Kolkata court on Friday directed the police to incorporate abetment to suicide charges against the principal and three teachers of La Martiniere for Boys over the death of Rouvanjit Rawla.
Principal Sunirmal Chak-raborty and three colleagues were arrested on October 4, but later released the same day. Rouvanjit’s father had alleged in an FIR that the boy had committed suicide following “physical and mental torture” by the principal and others, the police had not charged them under Section 305 IPC, which is non-bailable, and instead filed charges under Sections 324 and 352. Mr Rawla had appealed against this.
On Friday, when questioned by magistrate Apurba Kumar Ghosh, the police said abetment to suicide charges were not filed as no evidence was found to suggest the accused had driven Rouvanjit to suicide. The court told the police to add Section 305, but did not cancel their bail. Sources said La Martiniere for Boys might file an appeal in the Calcutta high court.
