Top law official defends PMO
New Delhi: In a new twist to the fallout of the Supreme Court stand on the coal scam issue, solicitor general of India Mohan Parasaran on Thursday attempted to distance the Prime Minister’s Office from Union law minister Ashwani Kumar.
The solicitor general claimed that the PMO was not aware of the meeting between Mr Kumar, and two bureaucrats from the PMO and the coal ministry which vetted the CBI report submitted in March to the Supreme Court.
The PM was not aware of the role played by the joint secretary from the PMO either, Mr Parasaran added.
The solicitor general told a news channel that it was improper for the Ashwani Kumar to call a meeting with the CBI to see and make changes to the status report. He also claimed that the PMO wasn’t aware of the details shared by the CBI with the law minister.
Mr Parasaran defended the UPA over the coal scam probe and said that it was not the first time that a law minister had met the CBI chief. “It happened in UPA-I and during the NDA rule too. If the CBI or the law minister had to do something clandestine, they could have done it in the darkest hour. Why do it by fixing official appointments?” Parasaran added.
