Top school defends corporal punishment
Breaking their silence, the authorities at La Martiniere for Boys School issued a statement denying charges and expressing deep anguish at the death of Class 8 student Rouvanjit Rawla. The school authorities, however, voiced their unhappiness at “attempts to hold the school entirely responsible”.
The school, which has been facing criticism over corporal punishment following Rouvanjit’s death, pointed out that “often corrective measures” have to be taken to ensure the environment of learning is not vitiated. “There are times when children need to be corrected and helped... to inculcate a sense of values among them,” the statement said.
They also strongly reiterated that their silence should not be misconstrued as an acceptance of guilt.
