Towel inside patient’s stomach, negligence case against AP’s MM hospital

The family members of the patient, in whose stomach the doctors at the Muslim Maternity Hospital in Chaderghat had left a towel during a Caesarean section, now want to register a complaint of negligence against the doctors and the hospital with the AP Medical Council.

The Chadarghat police had booked a case of negligence against the doctors on Thursday. According to Syed Waheed Ullah Hassani, the patient’s husband, “On March 29, 2011, my wife, Ashma Parveen, was admitted to the hospital for C-section. She gave birth to a girl. After a few weeks she started complaining of stomach pain. I took her to the same hospital again, but the doctors said everything was normal.”

He adds, “She later had a surgery because she had developed puss. However, her condition did not improve. After eight months, on December 1, we took her to the Maruthi Hospital in Champapet. During the operation, the doctors found a small towel in Ashma’s stomach. When we spoke to the authorities of the Muslim Maternity Hospital, they did not respond properly. I have registered a complaint with the police.”

Chaderghat police inspector Syed Nayeemuddin Javed said, “We have registered a complaint and booked a case under Section of 336 of the IPC against Dr Razak Hussain and Dr Suvrana Latha.”

Vice-chairman of APMC Dr K. Ramesh Reddy said, “The incident came to my notice today and we can only do something after the family provides proof and gives a written complaint against the hospital and the doctor.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
