Town tense after cop killed
There was a heavy police presence in Swai Madhopur a day after a police inspector, Phool Mohammed, was burnt alive by a violent mob. The authorities described the situation “tense but under control”. The state government has ordered a high-level probe in the incident. The state Assembly witnessed noisy scenes when the opposition BJP raised the issue.
The Swai Madhopur police has named over 20 people in an FIR for torching slain police inspector Mohammed’s vehicle, but no arrest has been made so far. The state government had suspended a deputy superintendent of police, Mahendar Singh, who ran away when the mob attacked the inspector.
The state government has announced a package for the family of the deceased inspector. The package included Rs 25 lakhs, an MIG flat, job to his kin and free education to his children. His body was taken to his ancestral village of Khirva under Sikar district where the funeral took place on Friday amid tight security.
A large number of mourners attended the funeral. The deceased was posted as an SHO in Swai Madhopur. He was killed after a protester, Rajesh Meena, jumped off from a water tank and died.
