UP traffic cops to revert to khaki
The last traces of blue will finally be wiped out from public eye from July 1 when traffic constables will shun their blue pants and opt for the traditional khaki ones.
The UP government has decided to do away with the blue uniform donned by traffic cops in the Mayawati regime. Blue, incidentally, is the official colour of the BSP and was extensively used in all government activities when Ms Mayawati was in power. “There are no political overtones to the decision. A committee set up to review uniform change has felt that the blue uniform resembles the uniform of a private security agency and often creates confusion in public mind. Besides, khaki is the traditional colour of the police force and hence it has been decided that traffic cops will wear white shirts and khaki pants on duty,” said IG (crime) B.P. Singh.
The UP traffic police, initially, had white shirt and white trouser as its uniform but in April 2008, the BSP government changed it to white shirt and blue pants. The reason, at that time, was that white pants were difficult to maintain due to rising pollution on the roads. The white shirt-blue pant ensemble, meanwhile, bore an uncanny resemblance to the uniform worn by Bahujan volunteer force, a voluntary wing of the BSP.
Samajwadi spokesman Rajendra Choudhury said, “For the common man, it had become difficult to differentiate between a BSP worker and a traffic constable.”
