Thrissur: Come January and about 50 travel writers from all over the world will be touring the cultural capital of Kerala to discover and experience the many wonders of the place.

In a unique initiative, the District Tourism Promotion Council of Thrissur is organizing a tour for travel writers in a bid to project and promote the place as a much sought-after tourist destination.

The week-long trip, scheduled to be held from January 8 to 14, is timed to coincide with the state's festival season and the International Theatre Festival of Kerala as well.

According to District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) officials, the tour comprises trips to various eco-tourism spots raging from the Athirappally-Vazhachal tourism circuit to the Kole wetlands and sites of historical significance like the Umbrella Stones in Kandanissery and the Shakthan palace.

“We have contacted major publications including the Lonely Planet which cover areas rich in culture, history and  food. We have also included family vacations and budget travel which will facilitate first hand reporting of the district’s tourism potential,” said V.K. Prabhakaran, secretary, DTPC Thrissur.

The DTPC is also planning to organize percussion ensembles and performances of traditional art forms like kathakali and koodiyattom, in addition to a mini pooram along the lines of the Thrissur Pooram.

“The attempt is to introduce tourists to all that there is to see and feel in Thrissur so that they will carry myriad pictures of the place all over the world,” said Jackson Chacko, spokesperson, DTPC.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
