Tribal youth tries to save sisters, killed
A gang of miscreants shot a tribal youth to death for his attempt to save his two elder sisters from allegedly being raped by them in Katwa, Burdwan. The incident took place in Dainhat early on Sunday. Ganesh Murmu was asleep with his parents and sisters at Adivasipara Nasipur village.
At around 3.30 am, four men covering their faces in black robes, came to their slum and called out his two sisters by their names. As the women stepped out in fear, the gang tried to rape and abduct them, according to preliminary investigations. Waking up to their screams, their 22-year-old brother jumped to their rescue, recalled their parents.
The gang then targeted Ganesh, they added. The sisters pleaded them to release their brother. But their appeals went in vain. One of them took out a revolver and fired one round on him from a close range and Ganesh slumped on the ground. The gang then fled.
In the morning, additional superintendent of police (Katwa) Tarun Halder went to the village, where the angry locals were demonstrating.
They said that this was the third incident of violence against women in the area.
