Trinamul MPs meet Manmohan

The game of political one upmanship between bitter rivals, the Trinamul Congress and the CPI(M), was once again taken to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s durbar on Tuesday by the Trinamul. A delegation of Trinamul MPs, led by the party’s chief whip in the Lok Sabha, Sudip Bandopadhyay, met the PM to draw his attention to the alleged hoarding illegal arms by the Left cadres in Bengal in preparation for the 2011 Assembly polls. Following the meeting, Mr Bandopadhyay said that the PM assured the delegation that priority would be given to the recovery of illegal arms in Bengal. He also reportedly assured the MPs that it would be ensured that parliamentary democracy functions in the state. Mamata Banerjee herself had met Dr Singh a few days ago to demand that the on-going joint operations against the Maoists be halted in Bengal.

SC slams C’garh over vague info on salwa judum

Slamming the Chhattisgarh government for furnishing “vague” information about the measures taken by it to tackle the Maoist menace in the state, the Supreme Court on Tuesday said it appeared that you (government) are “holding a brief” for Salwa Judum, an anti-Naxal vigilante group.
Not happy with the affidavit filed by the Chhattisgarh government, a bench comprising Justices B. Sudershan Reddy and S.S. Nijjar said, “The affidavit (by the state government) does not give full particulars about the steps taken by it and the information furnished is totally vague.”
After going through the affidavit, which did not mention anything about the activities of the Salwa Judum, the Supreme Court bench of Justice Reddy and Nijjar directed the state government to file a proper and comprehensive affidavit on the points discussed in the court.
Criticising the tone and tenor of the affidavit, the court observed, “It appears that you are holding the brief for them (Salwa Judum).” After going through the affidavit of the state government, the court said, “You want to suppress or hold something.” Pulling up the state government for not mentioning anything about the Salwa Judum in the affidavit, the court said, “You have only said that it is a spontaneous peoples’ revolution.
