Trinamul terrorising voters, Left tells EC
The Left parties on Wednesday alleged connivance of “local” police officials with Trinamul cadres in certain areas and sought the intervention of the Election Commission to ensure free and fair assembly polls in West Bengal.
“A section of local police officials are conniving with the Trinamul Congress and the district administration has not been able to control the situation,” said CPI(M) politburo member Sitaram Yechury, who along with leaders of the four left parties met CEC S.Y. Quraishi and the two commissioners here.
The Left parties sought immediate execution of non-bailable warrants (NBWs) against criminals who were “terrorising” people ahead of the assembly elections in the Marxist bastion. Mr Yechury alleged that none of the “criminals” against whom 175 non-bailable warrants were issued over a period of time have been arrested in East Midnapore. He said that the area Superintendent of Police has been changed by the EC and now the EC must ensure that the SP takes action on the NBWs.
“These criminals are moving about freely, terrorising not only our people, but those who were driven out of their hearths and homes a year ago and have now returned,” he alleged. “Unless these warrants are executed, the confidence of the people will not be restored,” Mr Yechury said.
