Trinamul unlikely to soften its stand
Even though the Centre appears gearing up to push FDI in multi-brand retail, key UPA ally Trinamul Congress is readying itself for another round of confrontation with the government. Trinamul Congress sources said that the party will confront the UPA government on key economic issues in the coming days both inside Parliament and outside.
West Bengal chief minister and Trinamul Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee is likely to come to New Delhi on August 22 and lead the party’s charge against government’s economic policies.
Ms Banerjee is likely to take part in the UPA coordination committee meeting on August 22, sources said. She is also likely to meet the UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi during her stay in the capital.
“We are examining the economic directions, which the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seems keen to take. We have noted with much anguish Dr C. Rangarajan led PM’s Economic Advisory Council’s economic outlook for 2012-13 report. We will red flag some of the issues being highlighted in the report,” said a senior Trinamul Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP.
Apparently, the Trinamul Congress is miffed at the move as underlined by the Dr Rangarajan for an urgent need to accelerate financial sector reforms, which includes allowing FDI in multi-brand retail sector to give momentum to the slowing economy.
The Trinamul Congress leader stated that Ms Banerjee is unhappy with the thrust being given to the allowing FDI in multi-brand retail as well as a campaign for hiking the diesel prices. Sources said that Ms Banerjee is even opposed to the idea of making FDI in multi-brand retail optional for the states.
