TV journo resigns as protests grow
Senior superintendent of police Apurba Jeevan Baruah told reporters, “We are carrying out a series of raids to nab those involved in the crime. With two more arrests, the total number of those arrested in Monday’s molestation case is now six.” He also informed that the SI who went to the spot to rescue the girl has also been placed under suspension.
Meanwhile, more than 15 organisations, including the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti and India Against Corruption, organised demonstrations in front of the hotel where members of the National Commission for Women (NCW) were staying.
Members of women’s rights bodies were told the NCW team had left the hotel when they went to submit a memorandum and some video footage. They were upset over the statement of NCW member Alka Lamba who tried to give a clean chit to the TV journalist without looking into all aspects.
“We had approached the members of the commission yesterday to present certain evidence but we were asked to come today after 11 am. When we reached here, the hotel management told us that they had left,” Sabita Lahkar, leading the demonstration, said.
However, sources in the administration said that the members of the commission had gone to meet Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi.
The news channel whose reporter is alleged to have planned the molestation announced here on Sunday that it has accepted the resignation of the reporter. However, this failed to pacify the women who had organised a protest in front of the office of the news channel and demanded that it be blacklisted. The editors of the news channel have been defending their journalist since Monday despite having the video footage in which the victim accused the reporter.
