In a twist, NIA finds bomb kept in bag, not briefcase

There is a new twist in the September 7 Delhi high court bombing as investigations have now revealed that explosive may actually have been placed inside a bag and not a briefcase as being perceived till now.

Even though initially the eyewitnesses had claimed that the bomb was in a briefcase, those injured in the explosion have now disclosed to the National Investigation Agency that the explosive in fact was kept in a bag.

Senior NIA officials who reviewed the investigations with the home ministry officials on Monday said they have recorded the statement of one of the injured victims who was standing very close to the explosive.

And this person, sources added, has disclosed that the explosive was in bag and not a briefcase.
“We will be talking to other injured victims also once their health improves,’’ an NIA official said.

The investigating agency is also trying to re-construct the entire sequence of events now to get a better idea what exactly might have happened on the day of the blast. NIA sources said the final forensic report regarding the nature of explosive is now expected on Tuesday.

But sources claims that it was definitely ammonium nitrate along with either PETN or even RDX which was used as a trigger.

“Without PETN or RDX having been used, ammonium nitrate on its own could not have caused such severe impact,’’ the official added.

Meanwhile, investigators have also confirmed that the probe into the four e-mails received so far claiming responsibility for the blast only the one sent from a cyber café in Kishtwar appears to be credible.

More people have been rounded for questioning in this regard.

Home Ministry officials are optimistic that once the High Court blast case is cracked it will provide valuable leads to other cases of terror as well in the last couple of years. "One should not be surprised once caught those behind the blast may reveal information about some more cases also,’’a top Home Ministry official said.

Ministry sources said it has been again reiterated to the State Police to remain on high vigil till the end of festive season.
