Two hurt in Rajahmundry blast
Two men sustained minor injuries in a low intensity blast at the railway station in Rajahmundry on Tuesday.
Police said, a 36-year-old man Manukonda Krishna from Kanupur village of Korukonda mandal, was entering the station when a bag containing iron pipes, filled with blasting material concealed in a pack of broomsticks, accidentally slipped from his hand resulting in the minor explosion.
He sustained injuries on his face while a retired railway employee, Mr Kondala Rao, who was standing nearby, was injured in one of his legs.
Both have been shifted to the government hospital and their condition is stable.
A bomb disposal squad was pressed into service in the area to diffuse explosives, if any.
Police say that such iron pipes filled with blasting material are generally used to hunt wild boars in the forest. Officials are trying to find out why Mr Krishna was carrying the material into a railway station.
Mr Krishna said he was heading for Chennai and that some people had asked him to keep the iron pipes with him. He said he had turned down that request and expressed surprise after the pipes had reached his bag.
Urban SP T. Ravi Kumar Murthy said, “We are trying to find out why the villager was carrying the iron pipes filled with explosives. It is not an improvised device and is just like a crude bomb.”
