Two Maoists killed in police firing in AP town
Two Maoists were killed in police firing during a combing operation in a forest area of Cherla town of the district this evening, police said.
The exchange of fire took place at around 6.15 pm in the interior forest area of the state bordering Chattisgarh, they added.
However, even though the police recovered two weapons, including one self-loading rifle (SLR) and some kit bags from the area, at least six left wing extremists succeeded in escaping in the deep forests.
"Two male cadres of the CPI (Maoist) have been killed in the exchange of fire, though their identity is yet to be ascertained," a senior police officer said.
The officer further said that the Maoists are likely to be either from Venktapuram or Cherla agency area.
According to him, the exchange of fire continued for more than half-an-hour, but none of the policemen were injured.
Even though the firing has stopped now, the police party is continuing the search operation in the surrounding areas, he added.
