Two SI murderers shot dead in encounter
Two men allegedly involved in the brutal murder of sub-inspector Alwin Sudan during Marudhupandiar Guru pooja were shot dead in a police encounter near Manamadurai on Friday.
Police sources told DC that the main accused M. Prabhu, 27, and his close associate M. Barathi, 25, had escaped when they were being taken from Madurai central prison to Sivagangai court to be produced in connection with an case lodged under the SC\ST Act.
They attacked the escort party and escaped from their custody when the vehicle was crossing Anna Nagar in Madurai.
Police launched a search and later in the afternoon found out that the two were hiding in Theethanpettai village near Kaalpirivu. A police team led by Manamadurai DSP Velladurai had surrounded them and asked them to surrender.
The duo instead hurled petrol bombs at the police jeep and attacked a constable. The police opened fire in self-defense in which both were killed on the spot, a senior official claimed. Their bodies were brought to Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai late at night.
The two were part of a gang proceeding to pay homage to Marudhu brothers on the occasion of the 211th guru pooja at Vembathur near Tiruppuvanam in Sivagangai district on October 27 stabbed Alwin Sudan to death. The gang had also inflicted injuries on two police constables accompanying the sub-inspector.
The brutal murder happened when a police team led by the then Manamadurai DSP Karunanidhi had followed the gang to nab them after they picked a quarrel with another group. On being confronted, they turned violent and killed the SI.
