‘UK marxist hobsbawm has a vision at 90’
Senior CPI(M) leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sitaram Yechury met noted British Marxist historian Eric Hobsbawm in London during his visit there. Hobsbawm told Mr Yechury that he is looking forward that in India, despite the electoral
defeats, the Left should be in a position emerge stronger. Mr Hobsbawm, who is more than 90 years of age, noted in his conversation with Mr Yechury that for the first time, protests worldwide, are talking about the crisis of capitalism which has entered the ‘’system’’ and movements and struggle of the people are no longer constrained to people’s issues.
However, Mr Hobsbawm said that in many countries, the marxists are not strong enough to take up this challenge and channelise it fully and he’s only looking forward that Indian should take a leading role in it. Mr Hobsbawm surprised Mr Yechury with his alacrity when the former spoke of his forthcoming book. “Despite his age, he (Hobsbawm) has the vigour and the vision,” Mr Yechury remarked.
