UK Prime Minister David Cameroon to ‘look into’ Mullaperiyar issue
The Indian Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, maintains a discreet silence on the Mullaperiyar issue over which Kerala and Tamil Nadu have been clinging onto their stands.
However, Dr Singh’s counterpart in the United Kingdom, David Cameron, has responded to an NRI’s missive on the issue, saying he would look into the matter.
Alarmed by the recent tremors near the Mullaperiyar dam, Tom Jose, a native of Idukki, who has a British passport and lives in Liverpool, wrote the letter to Cameron.
The UK Prime Minister thanked him for the letter. He also expressed his gratefulness for the time and trouble taken by Jose to get in touch with him.
The reply was forwarded to Jose by the Direct Communications Unit from one of the famous addresses in the United Kingdom the ‘10 Downing Street’ also known as ‘Number 10’.
When asked whether Cameron would intervene the issue, Jose replied: “I hope so, but I will try to organise a candle light demonstration in London or in Liverpool for international media interference.”
Cameron asked the Direct Communications Unit to place the matter before the department of international development for responding to matters raised by Jose. Ironically, the gravity dam was built by the British Army Engineering Corps during the time of the British Raj.
Jose, in the letter, raised the woes of Keralites living in four districts of the state and asked Cameron to intervene in the matter and save millions. He has been a UK resident for the last eight years.
