UK team says check PM car, govt outraged
In a bizarre demand, the British delegation to the Commonwealth Games on Saturday is understood to have demanded that due to security concerns Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s vehicle should also be checked, along with other VIP vehicles, when they enter Games venues.
However, sources said the government rejected the demand out of hand. “How would the British delegation feel if vehicles of their royal family were put under security check during an event in their country,” asked a senior official.
The request came after a high-profile meeting of the chefs de mission of a few participating countries with top officials from the Delhi government, police, Games Organising Committee and the DDA on Saturday.
The chefs de mission also proposed blocking the dedicated CWG lanes from 6 am to 11 pm to the common public, which was turned down by the government.
