Ulfa admits extortion notice
The outlawed Ulfa here on Wednesday admitted to have served extortion notice to chairman of St. Luke’s Hospital N. Stephen Nag.
In a statement sent to this newspaper via email, the Ulfa spokesman said that their extortion note of `20 lakh is not to the hospital, but Mr Nag in his individual capacity.
It has been served to Mr Nag, also the proprietor of a tea company, the Ulfa statement said.
Admitting the excellent services of the St. Luke Hospital, the Ulfa spokesman said that they are aware about the contribution of the hospital. In a significant remark, the Ulfa also appreciated the role of Christian missionaries saying, “We also know how American missionaries have contributed in progress of Naga people in Nagaland.”
The Ulfa’s reply came a day after the management of St Luke’s Hospital appealed to the outfit to withdraw its demand.
The chairman of the hospital, Mr Nag, told reporters that being a charitable institution, the hospital was in no position to fulfill the demand of the outfit.
Meanwhile, security sources here on Wednesday confirmed that Ulfa has also served extortion notices and mounting pressure on oil companies in the frontier state of Arunachal Pradesh.
The consortium of oil companies have their offices in Upper Assam’s Tinsukia district where extortion demand was sent.
