Ulfa chairman moves for bail plea
A day after Ulfa’s political adviser Bhimkanta Buragohain (79) was released from jail, the rebel group’s chairman Arbinda Rajkhowa has also moved an application for his bail in the TADA court on Monday.
Five top Ulfa leaders, including Buragohain, vice-chairman Pradeep Gogoi, deputy commander-in chief Raju Baruah, publicity secretary Mithinga Daimary and cultural secretary Pranati Deka have already been allowed to get enlarge on bail.
The political adviser of the outfit, popularly known as Mama who was released from jail after seven years on Sunday, said that the outfit’s commander-in-chief, Paresh Baruah, would come to the negotiating table after Ulfa’s jailed executive members are freed.
“Baruah never said that he’ll not come for the peace talks. We’ll discuss the matter at our general council,” Buragohain, the fifth top Ulfa leader released on bail in the past six months, told reporters.
Referring the bail application of the Ulfa chairman who was arrested in Bangladesh and handed over to security forces in India, security sources indicated that he would also be allowed to get enlarged on bail in order to facilitate the peace-process. The government has already decided against opposing the Ulfa leaders’ bail applications to resolve the decade-old conflict with pro-talk faction of Ulfa. Though, pro-talk action of Ulfa has been trying to mount pressure for talks, the elusive Ulfa chief remained non-committal to the peace-initiative so far.
Earlier, Burgohain was accorded grand welcome by his supporters on his release.
