Ulfa leaders back peace process
Top Ulfa leaders have initiated a peace dialogue with the government despite Ulfa chief Paresh Barua deciding to stay way from such an initiative. The Centre on Thursday said the peace initiatives with banned Ulfa have started in the “right direction” as some very senior leaders of the outfit have backed a negotiated settlement to end the decades-old insurgency problem in Assam.
“It has started in the right direction. We are hopeful of a positive outcome,” minister for development of Northeastern eastern region B.K. Handique said.
He said that the peace initiative is being taken forward by Assam government after a go ahead from Union home minister P. Chidambaram.
