Ulfa may try to disrupt peace

The outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (Ulfa) hardliners may try to disrupt the peace in the run up to the Independence Day’s celebrations in Assam.

Disclosing that elusive Ulfa chief Paresh Baruah was offering special incentives to its field commanders for successful bomb blasts, authoritative security sources told this newspaper that outfit was desperate to make their presence felt by carrying out subversive plan. Informing that since 2007 the outfit has not been able to carry out any major offensive even after their repeated attempt, security sources said that Ulfa cadres are holed up in Tirap, Changlang and Kharsiang area of Arunachal and Mon area of Nagaland, but they have not been able to enter Assam.
Claiming that security forces was keeping a close watch on movement of Ulfa rebels, security sources said that two armed groups one comprising its cadres Tibrijit Hazarika, Rupantar Kakoti, Arpan Jyoti Lahkar and Pradip Gogoi was operating in Upper Assam’s Tinsukia and Dibrugarh districts and second comprising Nayan Medhi and Rajeev Das are in Majuli area of Jorhat district.
Pointing out that a group led by Drishti Rajkhowa, which was responsible for carrying out a landmine attack on Army at Goalpara on Tuesday, was active in Lower Assam’s districts, security sources said that intercepts of their conversation indicate that outfit was desperate to launch offensives.
Asserting that majority of the offensives of Ulfa were foiled by security forces before it could be executed, security sources said that Ulfa was trying to rope in criminal elements to execute their plans.
Admitting that oil pipelines and Central government establishments are on the target of Ulfa rebels, security sources however said that state government has been alerted about the subversive plans of Ulfa rebels.
Security sources, which claimed that outfit has been pushed to wall, however, said that security forces have been asked to take necessary precaution while moving in vulnerable areas as Ulfa rebels may also target convoy of security forces.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
