Uma wants time to decide on BJP return
BJP chief Nitin Gadkari on Saturday said though he wants former party leader Uma Bharti’s back in the party fold, the saffron sanyasin has asked for more time for contemplation and to recuperate from ill health.
Mr Gadkari said Ms Bharti met him recently when the issue was discussed. But she told him that her physical health was not good and she wanted time for some contemplation and peace, the BJP chief said.
When Mr Gadkari was elected BJP chief last year, he had said that he wants former BJP leaders, including Ms Bharti, back in the party fold. Ever since Mr Jaswant Singh was taken back into the BJP in June 2010, nine months after he was expelled, speculation about Ms Bharti’s return to the BJP have gained ground.
However, unlike Mr Singh there are several leaders within the BJP who are apprehensive about Ms Bharti’s return. A majority section of the party’s Madhya Pradesh unit, including state chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, are against her return. A section within the RSS is also averse to her rejoining the BJP.
Recently, Ms Bharti had travelled with senior BJP leader L.K. Advani to Somnath and earlier to Raipur to attend Chhattisgarh chief minister Raman Singh’s father’s funeral ceremony, amidst speculation of her return.
