UN: India adding 300,000 hectares of forest yearly
Asia is leading the afforestation activity in the world with a significant contribution from India which is adding 3,00,000 hectares of forest every year, a senior UN official said. “I would highlight India, which still has important population growth. The forests in India are growing at 300,000 hectare per annum,” Eduardo Rojas-Briales, forestry director of Food and Agriculture Organisation told journalists on Wednesday.
According to the “State of the World’s Forests” report, published by the FAO, five countries — India, China, Australia, Indonesia and Burma — had the largest forested area in Asia and Pacific region.

CoI into ITBP drive for recruitment

Feb. 3: The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), which is in the middle of a storm following the violence and chaos at the paramilitary force’s recruitment drive in Bareilly, has ordered a court of inquiry into the incident.
An aspirant was killed during clashes when the job seekers went on a rampage in Bareilly on Tuesday while 20 persons returning home from the recruitment drive died after they fell from the roof of two speeding trains.

Haryana dacoit Badri shot dead

Feb. 3: Haryana’s most notorious dacoit Rajesh, alias Badri, who was wanted in more than 30 cases of murder, armed robbery and gun-running across six states and carried a `5 lakh reward on his head, has been slain.
The police cornered Badri close to a trifurcation of the state line with Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan and shot him dead in the ensuing encounter.
IG Ambala Range K.K. Sindhu said a Haryana police team tracked down the gangster to Dholpur (Rajasthan) where a source had spotted him visiting a local temple.
Badri and an accomplice, who were on a motorcycle, tried breaking the police cordon by opening fire but were shot after a prolonged exchange.
