Union urged not to vote for Cong
In what may have serious setback for the ruling Congress party in Western Assam districts, the All Koch Rajbonshi Students Union on Monday called upon voters of Assam not to vote for the ruling Congress in the ensuing Assembly election.
AKRSU president Biswajit Roy alleged that Congress led government had failed to meet the long standing demand of the Rajbonshi community of the state to grant them scheduled tribe status.
“Even after repeated assurances the Congress government failed to fulfill our demands in last 10 years. So we are going to urge the voters not to support Congress party,” he said.
The AKRSU which represent Koch Rajbonshi community of the state has strong hold over the community which plays decisive role in at four assembly segments of Western Assam. However, AKRSU has not suggested the name of any specific political party to which Koch Rajbonshi should vote.
Meanwhile, a powerful group of farmers—Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti has taken anti-Congress stand in the forthcoming Assembly elections in Assam.
Peasant leader Akhil Gogoi said, “We have taken an anti-Congress stand in the Assembly election in as the government being led by the Congress party has gone ahead with the construction of mega dams despite protests from the people of the state. It has also failed to check alarming rise in prices of essential commodities. The state government did not pay any heed to the various demands of the farmers of the state.
