Unique IDs to be rolled out this yr
Claiming that constitution of Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) was one of the high points of the UPA-2’s first year in office, the government on Tuesday said, the first batch of Unique ID numbers to Indian residents will be rolled out this year only.
“The UIDAI has been constituted to implement the UID scheme. This scheme shall ensure that various development deliverables reach to poor and needy in time. It shall enable better monitoring and help authorities to plug leakages,” the report card said.
It also claimed that necessary steps are being taken to ensure that the first batch of Unique ID numbers are rolled out in 2010 itself.
“Information commissions have been set up both at the centre and in the states. Government departments are being encouraged to put more information in the public domain; training programmes have been organised for CPIOs and appellate authorities and guidebooks have been prepared for use of both government officials and the public in general,” the report said.
Highlighting the “delivery monitoring unite” in Prime Minister’s Office, the report said that the aim is to ensure effective review of selected flagship programmes, initiatives and iconic projects.
The report also listed the “NGO Partnership System” as a government initiative to improve governance.
