UPA government's credibility is at rock bottom: Jaitley

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Arun Jaitley has said that the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government's credibility has hit rock bottom even as he listed numerous scams terming the recent coal scam as the biggest ever.

"The credibility of this government is at rock bottom. From cash for votes to the ......scandal in the 2G (telecom scam) allotment to the corruption in the organisation of the Commonwealth Games and now the coal block allocation.''

Needless to say that the coal block allocation is the biggest of all these scandals. A loss of 1,86,000 crore rupees and a corresponding gain to the private parties," Jaitley told media here.

He also slammed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), saying that the BJP doesn't have faith in its investigation process.

"There is a question mark on the government's governance capability. We (Bharatiya Janata Party) have lost faith in the CBI and its investigation," he said.

Meanwhile, BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar demanded increased accountability from the UPA while choosing to comment on the possibility of a mid-term poll.

"Though people have lost faith in the government when they will have majority in the house, the government doesn't dissolve technically.''

''They have lost the confidence of the people but there is majority in the house so at this time we will not like to speculate that whether there will be mid-term polls or no," he said.

"The issue is the corruption, the loot, the plunder and that must be investigated properly. Debate is important, accountability is also important and for that accountability we raise the demand, genuine demand for cancellation of coal block allocation and a proper enquiry," he added.

The coal scandal dominated the Monsoon Session of Parliament after the CAG report said that the under-priced sales of coalfields would have cost the national exchequer as much as 33 billion dollars in lost revenues.

The BJP has been demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh since he headed the Coal Ministry between 2006 and 2009, when many of the sales occurred.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
