UPA meet unanimously endorses statehood for Telangana
New Delhi: The UPA on Tuesday evening gave its consent to the formation of a separate state of Telangana.
Amidst high expectations, the UPA partners met at 7 Race Course Road, the residence of the Prime Minister, and endorsed the decision on Telangana unanimously.
The announcement came minutes after the third phase of Panchayat polls ended in AP where the Congress is reported to have done well in Telangana region, thus weakening the Telangana Rashtriya Samithi which wanted to claim the mantle of Telangana statehood.
Further details are awaited. The endorsement will now go to the Congress Working Committee.
Minutes after the decision was taken, Congress party incharge of AP, Digvijaya Singh met Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy, a strong votary of united AP.
Meanwhile, Union ministers from non-Telangana region met Congress party incharge of Andhra Pradesh Digvijaya Singh here on Tuesday to make one last attempt against splitting the state.
