US national dies in Kerala train mishap

A 52-year-old American national was killed when he slipped and fell under a moving train at Chengannur railway station in the district, police said today.

John O'Connell, who hailed from Texas, was travelling to Kochi with his wife Margaret yesterday when the couple realised that they had boarded the wrong train, they said.

When the couple jumped from the train, Margaret fell on the platform. O'Connell fell under the moving train and died, while his wife suffered minor injuries.

O'Connell was working as a teacher at an ashram at Malankara in Pathanamthitta district for the past several years after he came to India 20 years ago, they said.
