US, Nato try to stem Pak ‘rage’
An outraged Pakistan conveyed its “deep sense of rage” to the United States on Sunday over the “senseless” killing of 26 Pakistani soldiers in Nato airstrikes in the tribal belt, while both the US and Nato went into damage control mode. Washington promised to support a probe into Satu-rday’s deadly attack in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhawa province, while Nato headquarters in Brussels expre-ssed “regret” in the even-ing, saying the incident was “unintended”.
“Foreign minister Hina Rabbani Khar spoke to US secretary of state Hillary Clinton in the early hours of Sunday,” an official stat-ement said. “She (Clinton) conveyed the US governme-nt’s desire to work with Pakistan to resolve this issue”.
Pakistan shut Nato’s Afg-han supply lines and asked the US to vacate Shamsi airbase within 15 days, saying it was forced to “revisit the terms of engagement” with Washington.
