US offers help to investigate Varanasi blast
The US has offered India help in investigating the Varanasi blast. Tim Roemer, the American ambassador to India, made the offer in a meeting with national security adviser Shivshankar Menon. “The US offers whatever assistance the Indian government would be willing to accept in this difficult occasion,” Mr Roemer told journalists after the meeting.
Offering his condolences to the family of a two-year-old girl who was killed and the injured, Mr Roemer said: “The US stands shoulder to shoulder with the people of India in condemning such meaningless violence and brutal attacks on the innocent. We stand ready to provide any appropriate assistance to the Indian government to investigate this heinous crime and bring the perpetrators to justice.”
The deputy head of the German embassy, Mr Christian-Matthias Schlaga, called on home secretary G.K. Pillai to express his country’s condolences. Mr Schlaga condemned the horrific act and said Germany was with India in this hour of need. He also said the thoughts and sympathies of the German people are with the victims and their families and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
In a condolence message, the spokesperson of France’s foreign ministry cited President Nicolas Sarkozy as saying in Mumbai on Tuesday that nothing can justify terrorism. The official conveyed the French government’s condolences. A French national was “slightly affected” in the blast and was taken care of at the local hospital.
