US officials seek security guarantee for consulate
US consul general in Chennai Jennifer A. McIntyre met the newly appointed police commissioner S. George at his office on Thursday and is reported to have sought guaranteed security for their office and employees, as well as the many visa applicants coming there.
The US officials had suspended visa services from Monday following the attack last Friday on the mission building located on Gemini Circle during a protest by Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam against a film made by an American in which the Prophet was reportedly shown in bad light.
The visa services at the US mission in Chennai have been suspended this week, including Friday, September 21.
“The visa service may resume on Monday,” sources said.
However, the US officials are yet to make an announcement about the date on which the visa service could start again.
They advised visa applicants to monitor their website for information about operating status during the next week.
The government had appointed George as the city police chief in place of J.K. Tripathy after protests by Muslim organisations turned violent on Tuesday evening.
