US staff may be at ATCs when Obama plane lands
Will US security personnel and air traffic controllers be present at the air traffic control towers in Delhi and Mumbai when US Air Force One carrying President Barack Obama lands or takes off at these airports?
While senior Airports Authority of India officials told this newspaper Wednesday evening they were unaware of any such plan, other government sources said US personnel could be permitted to be at the ATC tower in Mumbai when Air Force One lands in India to reassure the US security agencies.
Government sources said the Americans had suggested a few months back that some of their officials could be at the ATC towers during all movements by the President’s aircraft. The sources said when it was suggested that US security and air traffic control personnel be present at the ATC towers during the visit, the proposal was instantly rejected by Indian ATC officials. Several meetings have been held at New Delhi’s IGI Airport on this in the past few days.
