Uttar Pradesh may get nation’s 1st ‘frozen zoo’

If all goes well, Uttar Pradesh may soon have a 'frozen zoo' that will help in saving endangered species of animals.

Dr Rajneesh Verma, a reproductive biologist working with the Monash University in Melbourne, has proposed the idea of setting up a cell bank with cells of endangered species to UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav.

“The chief minister was very responsive to the idea and has promised to get back. I explained my research in simple terms to him and said that if we save the cells of endangered species of animals, we can increase reproduction and preserve the species,” said Dr Verma.

Replying to a question, Dr Verma said that animals born through this method would be genetically and physically similar to those born naturally.

“In this case, too, we need a host (female) to carry the embryo and the new-born will come after the normal gestation period, If we create such a facility as a frozen zoo, we can be of help in conserving endangered species and Uttar Pradesh can also earn money,” he said and added that he preferred to first offer the advantage of his research to his home state before approaching any other state or country.

Dr Verma belongs to Lucknow and has studied biotechnology in Australia. He then started working in reproductive science in Monash University and has been a topper all through. He has been nominated for the young scientist award in Australia.

He said his research will help conserve endangered species like the Bengal tiger, Jaguar, snow leopards and other big wild cats.

Dr Verma will also be visiting Argentina to educate them about his research and has also been approached by United States.

“Through this technology, we can make sure that no species ever becomes extinct. Besides, it can be further improved upon to make it even more useful,” he said.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
