Varun gets HC notice over campaign speech
The Delhi high court on Wednesday issued notice to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Varun Gandhi on a petition filed by his maternal uncle V.M. Singh for allegedly making defamatory remarks against him during the 2009 Lok Sabha election campaign.
After going through the petition of Mr Singh, Justice Aruna Suresh asked the BJP leader to file his detailed reply by July 30.
Mr Varun Gandhi and Mr Singh, who was the Congress candidate for the 2009 Lok Sabha election campaign, were pitted against each other from Uttar Pradesh’s Pilibhit constituency.
In the petition filed by Mr Singh, through his lawyer Arjun Harkauli, he alleged that Mr Gandhi had allegedly made certain remarks linking him to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and working for a separate state of Khalistan.
Mr Harkauli also accused the politician of insulting farmers and Muslims during the election campaign.
The elections in Pilibhit constituency in Uttar Pradesh had witnesses a controversy following Mr Gandhi’s hate speeches.
He was later arrested and charged under the National Security Act (NSA).
The petitioner is a first cousin of Mr Gandhi’s mother and former Union minister Maneka Gandhi.
