Verdict doesn't justify Babri demolition: Chidambaram

New Delhi: Home Minister P Chidambaram on Friday said the judgment by the Allahabad High Court on the disputed Ayodhya site 'in no way' justified the 1992 demolition of the Babri Mosque by Hindu fanatics.

"This judgment has nothing to do with (demolition of Babri mosque in) 1992… That was, as found by the Liberhan Commission, completely unacceptable. This judgment in no way justifies the demolition of the Babri Masjid. That remains a criminal act," Chidambaram said.

He was talking to reporters giving the monthly report card of his ministry, a day after the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court decided that a Ram temple can come up where the 16th century mosque was razed on Dec 6, 1992.

The court ruled that the disputed land should be divided equally among the three parties to the dispute - two-thirds going to Hindus, the Ram temple and the Nirmohi Akhara, and a third to the Sunni Waqf Board.
