Very heavy rains for 48 hrs
Hyderabad: “Heavy to very heavy rains” have been forecast for the next 48 hours in the districts that are already badly affected by the continuing downpour over the past week.
The Indian Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rainfall in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East and West Godavari districts in the coastal region, and Adilabad, Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Warangal and Khammam in Telangana. “Heavy rain will occur at isolated places in the rest of Telangana and coastal Andhra during the same period,” said the IMD.
The Godavari receded marginally at Bhadrachalam and the water level was down to 50.6 feet against 55.8 ft on Sunday. Several areas, however, continue to be marooned. Rains disrupted normal life in many parts of Telangana.
Rain death toll rises to 12
The average rainfall on Monday was 10.8 mm against 2.2 mm on Sunday. Karimnagar received the heaviest rainfall of 27.6 mm. One more person died as a result of the heavy rains, taking the toll to 12; more than 5,000 houses were damaged of which 826 were fully damaged.
Crop submergence was reported in 59,878 hectares in eight districts including cotton in 23,245 hectares, soya bean 18,430 acres, maize 10,353 and paddy 4,606 acres. An agricultural officer said the extent of the crop damage will only be known when the flood waters recede.
Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy reviewed the situation with revenue minister N. Raghuveera Reddy, finance minister Anam Ramanarayana Reddy and chief secretary P.K. Mohanty. The chief secretary informed the Chief Minister that five helicopters had been pressed into service and one more is being hired for relief operations in East Godavari.
Seven National Disaster Response Force teams are engaged in relief operations in six districts and an additional team is being sent to Narsapur in West Godavari.
