Victims’ kin seek exit from ship firing case
The two families of the fishermen killed by the Italian marines in February last have moved the Kerala High Court seeking its nod for them to step aside from the case.
This is pursuant to the agreement they entered into with the Italian government, which, in turn, promised them a Rs 2 core compensation.
The families said they wanted to withdraw the counter affidavits and submissions made by them on the Italian’s plea to quash the FIR against the marines.
Doramma Valentine, wife of one of the killed fishermen, and two minor children along with sisters of Ajeesh Pink, another victim, submitted that they are willing to withdraw their submission against the marines in absolute.
However experts pointed out that since Justice P.S. Gopinathan has reserved his order on the plea, the latest move by the victims will not affect the case in any way.
The victims’ family had earlier informed the court that they reached an agreement with the Republic of Italy and a settlement for paying a compensation of ` crore to each distressed family was reached.
The court will consider the plea on Tuesday. Earlier, the court had sent the compensation pleas submitted by the two Italians for the Lok Adalat for resolving the compensation dispute.
The Adalath Bench comprising former Justice K. John Mathew and former district judge Sreelatha Devi will consider the plea.
