Vijayamma goes on fast track
Hyderabad: YSR Congress honorary president Y.S. Vijayalakshmi began her two-day hunger strike on Thursday at Indira Park, demanding that the state government implement unconditionally the fee reimbursement scheme for all eligible poor students.
Speaking on the occasion, Vijayalakshmi alleged that the state government was driving away the poor from higher education. The government had lost its credibility, she added, whereas YSR stood for faith, hope and assurance.
She demanded that the fee reimbursement scheme be made applicable to students who had got ranks below 10,000 in Eamcet. She alleged that the state government was increasing fees indiscriminately without any system in place and confusing students with its decisions.
Vijayalakshmi reminded that YSR had brought an IIT and the IIIT to the state, as he considered development and welfare as his two eyes. Vijayalakshmi also strongly refuted allegations that her fight for fee reimbursement was aimed at benefiting corporate colleges, and said that her party would always fight on behalf of people and not for corporate lobbies.
She said that the government was yet to release Rs 3,000 crore towards fee reimbursement to enable students to pursue their studies in the present academic year. She assured that if the YSRC came to power in teh state, all students would have the opportunity to pursue higher studies.
Several party leaders and students also participated in the hunger strike in support of Vijayamma.
