Vilasrao rejects calls to resign
Union minister for heavy industries Vilasrao Deshmukh on Thursday rejected Opposition demands for his resignation after the Supreme Court rebuked him for abusing his position when he was the chief minister of Maharashtra.
“These are political things. I cannot expect anything positive from my opponents,” Mr Deshmukh said when asked about the BJP’s and Shiv Sena’s demands that he quit in the wake of the court’s observations against him for his actions when he was CM. He said he has asked for a certified copy of the Supreme Court judgment.
The Supreme Court had on Tuesday pulled up Mr Deshmukh for shielding a Congress legislator’s money-lender father from a criminal case and imposed a `10 lakh fine on the state government.
But well-placed sources in the Congress made it clear that this is not a priority issue for the party which is currently busy with arrangements for its plenary in the national capital from December 19. “This (issue) has not even been discussed within the party,” AICC sources said.
