VITians debate global issues
Chennai: It was a different kind of an experience for youngsters who took part in the Model United Nations Conference organised by VIT University as they were given the roles of ambassadors and spokespersons of countries across the world.
This season’s conference, started on September 20, witnessed simulation of eight different committees, with the modelling of innovative new councils as well as the favourites.
The conference has been organised in collaboration with the United Nations Information Centre for India and Bhutan.
Damini Agarwal, student general secretary of the model UN and organizer of the conference at VIT University, said, “With close to 1,800 registrations, the conference has brought together over 500 national and international participants as well as professional executive board members from across India to simulate the discussions held in various bodies of the United Nations.”
Dr Son Kuswadi, first secretary (education), Indonesian high commission inaugurated the event with Okoth Nasser, first secretary (political), Kenyan high commission.
VITMUN offers a platform for students to debate on crucial global issues and formulate realistic solutions in the spirit of co-operation. The issues discussed range from economic concerns to questions of international peace and security.
Agarwal also said VITMUN strived to create an atmosphere for individuals to realize their complete potential and challenge them to take on new perspectives.
