Vocational courses for Classes 11, 12
Union human resources development minister Kapil Sibal on Monday stated that regional-level vocations will be introduced as subjects in CBSE for Class 11 and 12. He stated that new subjects would offer more choices to students and promote democracy in the classrooms.
Speaking after launching courses in geospatial technologies and mass media studies for CBSE Class 11 and 12, he stated that students should be allowed to follow their aspirations. Explaining regional-level vocations, he stated that courses in art and handicrafts forms that were considered endangered could also be introduced to secure their future.
He said while parents and teachers try to “discipline” a child through courses and personality, his aspirations remain ignored. “That I think is anti-democratic,” he added.
The two courses have already been introduced in some schools from the ongoing academic session. The CBSE has entered into an agreement with noted film maker Subhash Ghai’s Whistling Woods International for the course in mass media. The course will introduce students of Class 11 and 12 to five principal mass media — Film, TV, print, radio and the Internet.
Meanwhile, the HRD ministry on Monday established a four member committee to look into ways to attract more youngsters to the teaching profession. Official sources said the decision was taken at a higher education round table meeting headed by Mr Sibal. “Though it was felt that pay packages for teachers have increased more incentives needed to be given to attract the brightest brains to the profession,” the sources stated.
