Want Poojapura Chapatis - straight from jail?
'Poojapura chappathi', wheat chapattis made by the inmates of the Poojapura Central Prison will hit the market on Monday. The chappathis will be launched by filmmaker Cheran at a function to be held at the prison.
The chappathis are made using a recently-installed machine at the prison kitchen that can churn out about 2,000 chappathis in one-and-a-half hours.
“We will be selling chappathis, each weighing 200 grams, for Rs 2,” said prison superintendent Mr B. Pradeep.
“To begin with we are only taking bulk orders of a minimum of 250 chappathis. One can place the order with the prison at least a day in advance. In future, we will sell Poojapura chappathis in retail packs too,” Mr Pradeep said adding, “In order to ensure hygiene, those engaged in operating the unit are provided with hand gloves and face-masks.”
The Poojapura Central prison was already selling agricultural produce grown by the inmates inside the prison premises.
The Rs 2.6 lakh-worth chappathi machine was installed with the aim of providing good and hygienic chappathis to the prison inmates.
Before installation of the machine, it was a tiresome task for a section of prisoners to make thousands of chappathis for the inmates daily as about 4,000 chappathis have to be made every day.
The Viyyur Central Prison is also introducing chappathis made at the prison in the market.
