War of words over Ishrat Jahan

New Delhi: The CBI chargesheet is silent on the fact whether Ishrat was indeed a terrorist or not. CBI sources claimed that it was not their mandate to ascertain whether Ishrat was terror operative or not and the investigations only focused on whether the encounter was genuine or not.
Sources said the CBI probe established that Gujarat cops had even drafted the FIR of the case before the encounter took place on June 15, 2004.
The investigating agency is likely to elaborate on the actual conspiracy behind the killings in its supplementary chargesheet.
Meanwhile, asking the Congress not to play politics over cases of terrorist attacks or encounters, the BJP said the CBI chargesheet underplays the role of LeT and terrorists and indicts the security agencies, demoralising them in the process.

The main opposition party also questioned the CBI’s silence, saying it raised more questions than answers on the role of those accompanying Ishrat.
“The BJP thinks this chargesheet... very clearly underplays the role of LeT, underplays the role of terrorists and certainly indicts the security apparatus and demoralises them in the process,” party spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman said.
Kin: Relieved, not absolutely happy
The family members of Ishrat Jahan on Wednesday said they were relieved after the CBI’s conclusion that Ishrat was murdered in a fake encounter.
The family also hoped that the supplementary chargesheet of the CBI would exonerate Ishrat from allegations of terror links and bring forth Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s role in the encounter.
“I have been saying this for nine years that Ishrat was innocent. Today I am vindicated,” Ishrat’s mother Shamima Kauser said.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
